It is important to:

  • TALK to patients, family and carers about diabetes – they are the experts

  • KNOW the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes

  • Patients with type 1 diabetes need insulin every day and it should never be omitted due to risk of DKA (see linked safety news flash from Royal College of Emergency Medicine)

  • ENSURE the correct treatment is prescribed and a plan is in place for managing the patients diabetes

  • SPEAK UP if there is a problem or ASK FOR HELP if you are unsure
