Introduction
When a patient with diabetes is admitted to hospital it is vital to ensure that their diabetes management is correct and safe
It is important to:
TALK to patients, family and carers about diabetes – they are the experts
KNOW the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes
Patients with type 1 diabetes need insulin every day and it should never be omitted due to risk of DKA (see linked safety news flash from Royal College of Emergency Medicine)
ENSURE the correct treatment is prescribed and a plan is in place for managing the patients diabetes
SPEAK UP if there is a problem or ASK FOR HELP if you are unsure
